A free summer festival featuring a pavilion designed by young people has kicked off at Lea Bridge Library, Leyton.

The People’s Pavilion Festival, which started on 29th July and is running until 11th August, includes an eclectic line up of experimental poetry, virtual reality and artificial intelligence workshops, films on gentrification and displacement and a DJ set.

A team of young cultural producers produced the festival, while the pavilion housing events was created by young people between 14-18 from across East London as part of a design competition.

This year the winning design team were from the borough of Tower Hamlets, Bruno De Marco (18), Tomi Balogun (18) and Zhané Philips (18), with their pavilion design Roots of Heritage. Over 2,500 members of the public voted for their design.

Philips of the winning design team said: ‘Designing and constructing this pavilion as a team has allowed me to develop an understanding that Architecture should be timeless, but it doesn’t mean it should be restricted in its location, collaborating with the build team, architects and Beyond the Box to design a structure that is demountable has supported this reality.”

Zhané added: “Bringing the structure to life as a cultural awakening to the community and yet giving it a long-term sustainable purpose by creating and gifting this pavilion to the community and beyond in various periods and locations.”

The project saw young participants worked with our industry collaborators to develop their pavilion designs further in addition to an all-expenses paid study-trip to Venice, Italy to explore La Venice Biennale with a special tour of this year’s British Pavilion.
