A man in his 50s was reportedly assaulted and subjected to racist abuse outside Noor ul Islam Mosque in High Road Leyton yesterday evening (7th July)

Police are investigating a reported racist assault outside a Leyton mosque yesterday evening (7th July).
Metropolitan Police officers were called to reports of a racially aggravated assault at Noor ul Islam Mosque in High Road Leyton at around 9.51pm.
According to a spokesperson for the force, on their arrival they found a man in his 50s had been assaulted and subjected to racist abuse.
London Ambulance Service paramedics took him to hospital where his injuries were assessed as “neither life-threatening nor life-changing”.
A 42-year-old male suspect who was arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm remains in hospital after suffering a head injury during the assault.
A Met Police spokesperson said: “We take reports of racially motivated hate crime extremely seriously and recognise the profound impact such incidents can have on victims. Officers are committed to bringing those who commit such offences to justice.
“We know the community will be concerned about this incident and we have stepped up reassurance patrols in the local area. We would urge anyone with concerns to speak to officers.”
Leyton and Wanstead MP Calvin Bailey issued a statement on this incident this morning, saying:
“Whilst I welcome the swift police action, I want to acknowledge the fear and upset this will have caused within our community.
“We must be clear: there is no place for hatred in Leyton and Wanstead. An attack on someone because of their faith is an attack on all of us.
“The police are investigating this as a hate crime, and it is right that it is treated with the seriousness it deserves.
“Tomorrow I will be meeting with the neighbourhood policing team leader and Brother Yusuf to discuss what more can be done to support the mosque and keep our community safe.
“Leyton is strongest when we stand together. Acts of hatred will never define our community; the solidarity and compassion shown by our residents always will.”
A London Ambulance Service spokesperson said: “We were called at 9.48pm yesterday (7th July) to reports of an assault in High Road, Leyton.
“We sent two ambulance crews to the scene. We treated two patients and took them to hospital.”
Noor ul Isam Mosque was contacted for comment.
