Waltham Forest’s most beautiful homes have opened up to the public as part of the London Open House Festival.

The London-wide festival run by charity Open City, which kicked off on 14th September, has a multitude of events taking place throughout the borough this week.

The festival allows visitors to learn about London’s “unique” heritage and communities through various tours and events such as talks and workshops.

This includes a tour called From Forest to Morris: A Walk around Walthamstow.

The tour will begin outside Costa Coffee at Walthamstow Central Station and will showcase how the area grew from a village into a “thriving” suburb, the variety of buildings and inform visitors of its social history.

Good Shepherd Studios, an art studio in Leytonstone, will also be opening its doors as a part of the festival. Visitors will get the chance to see “behind the scenes” of the studio and bring along food and drink to join in the studio’s Pastures Community Garden Picnic.

Another event taking place is the demonstrations of live production shifts by Square Root factory in Leyton. It will include visitors being shown around the production space, where fruit is juiced, and other ingredients processed into their soda mix. Those who attend will also be taken around Square Root’s “state-of-the-art” packaging line.

Chingford’s Mornington Hall will be showing a short film of the building’s 100-year history. The film will cover its time as a school, wartime ARP station, restaurant, and school dinner centre. There will be live music from the last century, along with teas, coffees, cakes, commemorative brochures, and mugs, all available to purchase.

Those who plan to attend the Open House Festival can find a map on the website with all the events happening in the borough. Visitors, volunteers and contributors all need to register for an account on the website.

The festival ends on 22nd September.
