A van linked to a series of fly-tips that cost Waltham Forest Council thousands of pounds to clear has been seized in Leyton.

The council move comes after the Lea Bridge area has been blighted by routine fly-tipping incidents over the past three months. The white Ford van was seized using the council’s CCTV network and cameras installed by the Argall Business Improvement District team.

On Thursday 11th April, one of the vehicles was spotted by a council enforcement officer parked on Burwell Road, Leyton. The council says that the van also had a number of outstanding parking tickets.

The impounded van is currently being stored at a car impound and will be crushed if the owners do not collect it within a 15 day window and pay the fly-tipping charges.

According to the council, the registered owners of the van were invited to an interview under caution on several occasions but they did not attend any.

Clyde Loakes, deputy leader and cabinet member for climate and air quality, said: “Residents rightly expect to be able to enjoy clean, tidy neighbourhoods. No one wants to have put up with unsightly and sometimes dangerous mess left all over the place.

The owners of this vehicle have cost local people thousands of pounds to clean up their mess. Now they either have the choice to face up to the consequences of their actions or have their vehicle crushed.

Cllr Loakes continued: “We will not hesitate to take significant action against those responsible for such blatant disrespect to our borough and residents. It’s not just council taxpayers who have been left out of pocket – several local businesses have also had to shoulder the costs of this laziness.

This incident yet again shows that we are determined to clamp down on the scourge of fly-tipping and hold those responsible to account.”

Waltham Forest and Hackney Councils are also seeking to seize a second white Ford van linked to the fly-tipping incidents and unpaid parking tickets.

The council is also currently consulting on a planned crackdown on disruptive car meets. Running until Wednesday 24th April, the consultation regards the implementation of a public space protection order, which would prohibit large congregations of drivers.

Car meets are linked to racing, revving engines, ‘problematic congregation,’ and drug-related incidents, including the use of NO2 laughing gas.

The Argall Industrial Estate in Lea Bridge and Hoe Street in Walthamstow are two of the most affected areas in the borough.
