Miriam C, the Instagrammer behind @leyton_living, celebrates the return of Leyton’s long-running neighbourhood sale…
Now in its fifth year running, the Francis Road Jumble Trail is returning to Leyton on Sunday 30th May.
If you aren’t familiar with the term, a ‘jumble trail’ is akin to a classic car boot sale, but with stalls scattered around the neighbourhood in people’s front gardens.
The volunteer-led event, which is supported by Waltham Forest Council, was set up in 2017 as a way to bring together the community and meet neighbours while shopping sustainably, and has been a great success.
Stalls are set up across Francis Road and surrounding streets, and everyone is encouraged to participate as a seller or buyer.
Previous years have seen a great mix of plants, art, books, games, vintage clothes being up for sale. The trail has also been a fantastic opportunity for local makers to showcase their creations, from handmade jewellery and crafts to delicious cakes and street food.
Local organiser Esme Bradbury told me: “I’ve personally met loads of new friends and neighbours through the Jumble trail.
“Last year, in spite of Covid, we had over 100 stalls and lots of visitors from Leyton, Leytonstone and beyond who came to follow the trail and search for hidden treasures!”
In addition to the social benefits, an environmentally-friendly approach to purchasing new items is also front-of-mind.
Esme adds: “The event also seeks to promote a sustainable ethos, encouraging people to sell or donate their items to a new home rather than sending them to landfill.”
After costs, any profits from the stall fees (just £5 per stall) go to the Celia Hammond Animal Trust, a UK rescue charity. The seller keeps the profits from their stall, too.
As lockdown eases, this is a brilliant way to reconnect with the local community and meet your friendly neighbours in a safe, socially-distanced way.
