Community groups in Waltham Forest are to hold a series of ‘People’s Assemblies’, with organisers saying the aim is to give residents a “stronger, more direct voice in local decision-making”.

A People’s Assembly in Chingford Mount on Wednesday 11th March is being organised by Chingford and Woodford Green Community Independents, a Faiza Shaheen backed group which is standing nine independent candidates in May’s elections across two wards in Waltham Forest and one ward in Redbridge.

With trust in the established political parties, and voter participation, at record lows, organisers say People’s Assemblies offer a “practical way to rebuild engagement at a local level”.

People’s Assemblies are facilitated forums where local people set the agenda, discuss concerns in small groups, and agree on their next steps.

“It shifts the focus from party political platforms to community-led solutions,” says Deborah Hollingsworth, one of the organisers.

“The model is being successfully piloted elsewhere in the capital. In Lambeth for example, People’s Assemblies are bringing residents together to enact positive change in housing affordability, estate regeneration, youth services and climate action.”

“The aims of the events are simple: build connection, listen, and create a shared plan for the area’s future.”

The People’s Assembly will be held at 7.30pm on Wednesday 11th March in Saint Edmund’s Centre on Chingford Mount Road.
