There will be several free events celebrating Tamil culture on Saturday 25th January

Waltham Forest Council is set to co-host free events including a harvest festival, exhibition, and cultural performance this January to mark Tamil Heritage Month.
Tamils are a South Asian community that originated in India and Sri Lanka, and are predominantly Hindu. Tamil is one of the world’s longest-surviving languages, dating back to 300 BCE.
The council is collaborating with the Federation of Tamil Organisations in Waltham Forest, comprising seven local organisations to host a day of Tamil celebrations on Saturday 25th January.
From 10.30am to 1.30pm at Bedford Road Car Park in Walthamstow, locals will be able to enjoy The Pongal Festival.
The festival marks the harvest season and is celebrated with the preparation of a special dish called Pongal which is made of newly harvested rice, milk, and other ingredients symbolising prosperity and good fortune.
Later in the day, the Tamil antiquity exhibition promises a fascinating journey into Tamil culture and history from ancient instruments to historical ornaments.
It will run from 4pm to 6pm at Frederick Bremer School in Walthamstow on Saturday 25th January.
Guests to the exhibition will also be able to enjoy a vibrant variety of cultural performances from 5pm to 9pm. These include Bharatanatyam, a classical Indian dance form known for its grace and storytelling, and Koothu, an ancient form of storytelling that originated in Tamil Nadu/Sri Lanka.
It is a type of open-air theatre that involves singing, dancing, and acting, and is often performed during temple festivals and Tamil traditional festival.
Thre will also be veena and carnatic violin performances that highlight the rich tradition of Tamil classical music.
