The council are holding a free ‘Community Day’ event this weekend at the Fellowship Square.

The family fun day will take place on Sunday 15th September in celebration of the work carried out by voluntary and community groups in the borough. The day will include various activities and performances delivered by the Voluntary and Community Sector (VCS).

The range of activities includes paper lantern making, African drumming, Tai Chi, an East Asian dance class and inclusive arts for children and children with SEND (Special Educational Needs and Disabilities).

Interactive cultural experiences and educational activities, such as visiting landmarks through virtual reality and learning about local wildlife, will also be available throughout the day.

The stage performances will start from 12.40pm to 5pm. The event will also have workshops to participate in, such as the life drawing of Capoeira where the dancers from Olorum Capoeira School will demonstrate the fluidity, balance, and strength of Capoeira.

Jason Hawkridge, a drawing tutor, will also be supporting participants in observing and recording the movement of the human form.

There will also be an inclusive dance party by Speaker Box Dance Party, with the aim of spreading messages of positivity to the square. The dance routines are designed for all ages and abilities.

Another workshop at the event is a Sewing and Mending one with Mika Sembongi where participants will learn creative and sustainable ways to mend clothes.

Attendees can bring their own clothes and learn various sewing techniques, including the Japanese Sashiko mending technique.

There will be plenty more performances and workshops throughout the day for all ages and abilities to enjoy.

The event is free, and no tickets are required for attendees.
