Network Rail admonishes Blackhorse Road Station litter louts amid ‘disgusting’ rubbish build-up

Land behind the station’s southbound Overground platform is strewn with rubbish, reports Marco Marcelline

Network Rail has called a build-up of rubbish at Blackhorse Road Station “a shame” while urging people to dispose of their litter properly.

The organisation was responding to images shared on X (formerly Twitter), that showed land behind the station’s southbound Overground platform strewn with rubbish.

The rubbish includes fast food wrappers, plastic bottles, and beer cans, and appears to have accumulated over some time without being cleared up.

X users reacting to the mess called it “disgusting”, and urged Network Rail to clean it up.

While the station is operated by Transport for London (TfL), the land the rubbish is on belongs to Network Rail, which is owned by the government.

Speaking to the Echo, a Network Rail spokesperson said it was looking into getting the rubbish cleared “as soon as we can”.

They added: “We want all our passengers to have the best possible journey, so it’s a shame to see that some people have been littering at Blackhorse Road.”

Issuing an appeal to station users to dispose of “bottles, cans and wrappers properly”, the spokesperson said Network Rail “can’t constantly assess and remove litter right across the network” because it “has to be responsible for taxpayers’ money”.

Network Rail has a statutory duty to clean up any litter on its land. According to its website, there are “regular, scheduled clean-ups in stations and 100 metres either side within [its] boundary”.
