The RSPCA is asking for help to rehome a litter of kittens left dumped in a box just before Christmas.
The tiny cats were found wrapped in a blanket and abandoned in a white box in Sybourn Street, Walthamstow, three days before Christmas.
RSPCA animal welfare officer Susan Naish collected the kittens and took them into care. She said: “The kittens must have been very confused and frightened being left by the side of the road like unwanted belongings.
“To dump an animal at any time of year is shocking, but to leave such little and vulnerable babies in the midst of winter – and just before Christmas – is despicable.”
The kittens, now aged between seven and nine weeks old, have been named Donna, Vixen, Dancer, Prancer and Rudolph. They will soon be ready to go to new homes so anyone who wants to adopt them should call the RSPCA’s East London branch on 07958 578 151.
Susan said: “I suspect these kittens were an unwanted litter but they may have been bred to sell as Christmas presents but then weren’t purchased.
“This highlights the needs for more education to ensure potential cat owners understand the commitment, responsibility and costs involved in taking on a pet, as well as the importance of neutering cats.
“We are completely overrun with cats and kittens in our centres and more are always coming in.”
The RSPCA (Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) urges all cat owners to have their pets neutered as the cat population in the UK has reached ‘crisis point’. More cats are abandoned than any other pet, and in 2015 the RSPCA collected 4,521 across the country.
If anyone knows where these abandoned kittens may have come from or saw anyone acting suspiciously in the Sybourn Street area on 22nd December, the RSPCA would urge them to get in touch:
