Empire Cinema in Walthamstow has celebrated its first birthday.
More than 300,000 tickets have been sold since the nine-screen venue officially opened on 19th November 2014 in the town centre.
It became the first cinema to open in the borough for over a decade, since the closure of the former EMD cinema just around the corner in Hoe Street in 2003.
In its first year 242 different films have been screened by Empire Cinema, including Bollywood, Turkish, and Polish films. The most popular films were Spectre, Jurassic World, Minions, Avengers: Age of Ultron, and Inside Out.
Empire’s highest grossing day was 14th February, when Fifty Shades of Grey was the most popular film, while the start of April was the busiest week, as Fast and Furious 7 opened.
In total, 6,950 hot dogs and 2,100kg of pick’n’mix have been consumed in Empire Cinema’s first year.
Adam Root, general manager, said: “We are very excited to be celebrating our first birthday. This past year has been fantastic and the cinema is proving to be a huge success.
“The future looks bright for Walthamstow and we can’t wait for upcoming blockbusters like Star Wars to hit our screens.”
