Waltham Forest Council is set to roll out more than 40 new cycle hangars across the borough as part of a boost for ‘active travel’.

14 will be installed in Leyton and a further 29 have been earmarked for streets in Walthamstow.

The weatherproof, three-metre long storage units can be used by cyclists to store up to six bicycles, for a fee, and will be available from Tuesday, 5th May.

The vast majority across London are owned by borough councils and available to subscribing residents.

A council spokesperson said: “Residents have told us active travel is important to them, and since we started to introduce bike hangars in Waltham Forest the local demand has been significant.

“They are especially useful for people living in flats and properties without gardens.

“Hangars allow these residents to make the most of the health and money-saving benefits of cycling in cases where it is not possible for them to store a bike inside their property.”

Waltham Forest initially planned to install a further fourteen, according to a notice posted on 12th February, but they were abandoned. The traffic order published this week does not specify why.

The council has been pushing residents to walk more, cycle more and use public transport, in line with the Mayor of London’s ambitions. ‘Active travel’ will help lower emissions and improve Londoners’ health, proponents say.

Last February, the council scrapped 15 minutes’ free parking in Chingford, which proved controversial with residents who said they relied on the cars to go shopping.
