A new free exhibition at Blackhorse Workshop Café in Sutherland Road features a series of striking flower prints designed by local young people.

The Flowers of Sutherland Road which is running until 14th March comes as a response to a new wildflower planting scheme along Sutherland Road and have been immortalised in 16 shutter murals, including one outside Blackhorse Workshop Café.

Each design is a new hybrid flower created by reimagining the petals, pistils, sepals, stamen and stems of the wildflowers that have been planted. The prints were designed as part of a project delivered with What If Projects and Europa, supported by Waltham Forest Council and the Mayor of London.

Blackhorse Workshop Director Jo Clarke said: “Regeneration projects don’t always feel relevant to young people, but this project is a fantastic example of how collaboration between local creative and community focused organisations can create meaningful opportunities for young people to engage with regeneration projects and create beautiful outcomes!”

The exhibition is the first in an ongoing series of free exhibitions at Blackhorse Workshop Café, which also runs a monthly Community Kitchen, which offers high-quality food on a ‘pay what you feel basis’.

The artwork was made via Blackhorse Responders, an award-winning creative activism programme for 15 – 25-year-old makers. Running annually over five months, the weekly programme enables young people to explore how design can transform attitudes, and empowers them to use their voice creatively engage others in the issues they care about.
