Works on a new ticket hall, two lifts and a footbridge will begin on 17th February and finish in ‘spring 2027’, reports Marco Marcelline

Works to make Leyton Station step-free will commence on 17th February, Transport for London (TfL) has confirmed.
Upgrade plans, which comprise of two lifts, a new ticket hall and a footbridge, were first announced by TfL in 2021, but were in limbo until the government committed £14million from its Levelling Up fund in January 2023.
Work had been projected to begin last summer and to last until 2026, but delays to awarding the construction contract meant work will now begin on 17th February with the upgrade finished in “spring 2027”.
In addition to the government funding, the upgrade project is financed by £9m from Waltham Forest Council, and money from TfL.
TfL has awarded a contract to TWBN, a joint venture between Taylor Woodrow and BAM Nuttall, to deliver the upgrade.
Leyton Station will remain open throughout the works, except for a “small number of weekend closures” around “halfway” through the construction programme, TfL said.
The upgrade comes amid 2,000 new homes that are currently being built near the station with a further 5,300 new homes proposed.
Council deputy leader Clyde Loakes said: “It’s great to see the benefits of housing growth being invested in critical local infrastructure like Leyton Tube station.
“The council has made a long-standing commitment to the residents of Leyton and the south of the borough to improve public transport links in the area and has contributed £9m as it works with TfL, GLA and the Department for Transport to upgrade Leyton station, making it accessible for all customers alongside improved facilities This is great news for Waltham Forest and all of its residents.”
Leyton and Wanstead MP Calvin Bailey, said: “These much-needed improvement works to Leyton station are great news for local residents. Local transport provision is vital for our community, and I welcome the works that will be carried out to improve the accessibility of this station for all users.”
Currently, Chingford, Highams Park, Lea Bridge, Walthamstow Queens Road have step free access in the borough. Adding Leyton to that list would mean the borough will have a total of five step-free stations.
Editor’s note: This article has been corrected to state that Waltham Forest currently has four step-free stations not three as previously stated.
