Aldi’s Leytonstone store has been shut since Wednesday (18th December) owing to unexplained maintenance work.

A sign outside the High Road store, which opened in October, stated it was shut due to “technical issues”.

It remained shut today and when contacted by the Echo, Aldi could not confirm when the store will reopen.

The Aldi store occupies the ex-Matalan site at 829-837 Leytonstone High Road.

It is the first Aldi to open in Leytonstone and is run by store manager Summer Willfang, along with a team of 35 colleagues.

Team GB bronze medallist Nethaneel Mitchell-Blake attended the opening of the store on 3rd October when he gave away complimentary bags of fresh fruit and vegetables to the first 30 customers in the queue.

Last week, Aldi was hit with a £64,000 fine stemming from a 2020 council inspection that uncovered a mice infestation at its Heybridge Way, Leyton outlet.

Aldi was also slapped with a legal bill of £241,177 after pleading guilty in Snaresbrook Crown Court to a charge relating to its failure to put adequate measures in place to control pests. Waltham Forest Council says it comes as the first time Aldi has been prosecuted for food hygiene offences in the UK.

Environmental health officers visited the supermarket in Heybridge Way, Leyton, on 20th April 2020, after a customer complained about the presence of mouse droppings and fur in a partially unwrapped Easter egg.

Officers found numerous mouse droppings throughout the premises, including in food packaging and within open milk and bread display areas.
