The Castle Cinema in Homerton will screen North by Northwest on 13th August, followed by a Q&A with two Hitchcock experts
An East London cinema will hold a special double screening of Alfred Hitchcock’s classic North by Northwest on Tuesday 13th August, the lengendary film director’s 125th birthday.
The film, released in 1959, shows a New York City advertising executive (Cary Grant) going on the run after being mistaken for a government agent by a group of foreign spies. He then falls for a woman (Eva Marie Saint) whose loyalties he begins to doubt.
The film will first be shown on 11th August at 1.45pm and a second screening on 13th August will be followed by a Q&A with Leytonstone Hitchcock expert Gary Lewis (of Hitchcock Film and Tours) and the filmmaker Dominic Stinton.

Speaking to the Echo, Gary said: “I thought it was a fitting tribute to the master of suspense to show the movie North by Northwest which is celebrating its 65th anniversary.
“Its lead actress has just turned 100 years old and the Castle Cinema is only a stones throw from where Hitchcock started his movie career at Gainsborough film studios in Hoxton in 1925. I will be conducting a Q&A with the audience afterwards and we will be celebrating Alfred’s birthday with cake, so please join us on 13th August and celebrate Hitch’s birthday.”
Castle Cinema is an independent, crowd-funded community cinema on Chatsworth Road in Homerton. It opened in December 2016. Waltham Forest currently doesn’t have a cinema after the closure of the Walthamstow Empire in July 2023, though a new operator is set to re-open the venue shortly.
