Waltham Forest Council is rolling out separate weekly food waste recycling collections throughout the borough.

Communal flats will receive five litre indoor caddies and compostable bags to line it with. A large grey food waste bin will be placed in communal areas for residents to empty waste from their caddies.

Weekly food waste collections will begin to roll out for kerb side properties from September. They will receive a 23 litre outdoor lockable caddy and a five litre indoor caddy alongside compostable bags to line them with.

It should be noted that any food and drink packaging, flowers or liquids cannot be put into the caddies or outdoor food bins.

The food waste will be collected every week on the same day that the refuse and recycling bins are collected, but it will be done by a different collecting crew. Though the brown bins may still be used for food waste, it is recommended that the new food waste bins are used as much as possible.

Around 26% of waste in the average household bin is food waste. Collected food waste will be sent by refuse collectors to a biogas plant to be turned into the renewable energy source biogas or into fertiliser that will be used on farmland to grow more food.

Replacement caddies can also be requested via the bin requestment form. If the outdoor bins are damaged or lost or an additional one is needed, a new one can be requested by emailing [email protected]

More information about the new bin collections can be found on the council’s website
