A 68-year-old man is in a critical condition at hospital after being found unconscious from “assault injuries” in a house at Matcham Road, Leytonstone yesterday (16th October).

The man was found by police who were making enquiries in connection to the arrest of a 25-year-old man at the scene of an attempted car theft in Plaistow, Newham at 5am on 16th October.

The Metropolitan Police said it was treating the arrest and the 68-year-old man’s condition as linked incidents.

A neighbour, who asked to remain anonymous, told the Echo that police had been knocking on doors on Matcham Road on yesterday afternoon to ask for more information about a reported disturbance at the address “between 2am-4am” on the 16th.

She said that a forensics tent was erected outside a house on Matcham Road yesterday afternoon and that there has been a continuous police presence at the address since then.

In a statement the Metropolitan Police said: “At around 5am on Monday 16th October, officers were called to reports of an attempted car theft on Boundary Lane, E13. Officers attended the scene and arrested a 25 year-old man. Further enquiries led to officers attending an address on Matcham Road E11, where they found a 68 year-old man unconscious.”

The statement continues: “The man taken to hospital where he remains in a critical condition. Officers are treating the two incidents as linked, enquiries are ongoing.”

It is unclear if the stolen car belongs to the critically injured man. The Echo contacted the Metropolitan Police for further comment.
