Iconic pie and mash shop to reopen as Japanese restaurant

An iconic pie and mash shop in Walthamstow that shut down earlier this year is set to reopen as a trendy Japanese restaurant.

After a period of uncertainty following its “temporary closure” in January, L Manze announced it was shutting down for good in March, citing a lack of interest among Walthamstow diners. 

The shop began trading in 1929 and, nine years ago, was grade-II listed in recognition of its “exceptionally complete interior”.

The listed status means there are legal limits on what, if any, changes new tenants Taro Japanese Restaurant can make to the premises. 

The Taro brand currently has restaurants in Soho, Balham and Kennington and also plans to open a new location in Pimlico, according to its website.

In an interview with Eater in March, L Maze owner Nicholls claimed his sales had been affected by the decline of Walthamstow’s working class population and new residents’ love of food “fads”.

He told the magazine: “One minute it’s sushi, then panini, ciabatta, pulled meat, and wood fired pizza…all this dim sum.”
