A programme of free events will last from 10am until 9pm on Saturday

Waltham Forest will celebrate its first ever Windrush Festival this weekend in honour of the Windrush generation and the Afro-Caribbean community.

On Saturday, 25th June, venues around the borough will host free events from 10am until 9pm, beginning with the Windrush Day flag being raised at the Town Hall.

The Windrush generation refers to people who emigrated from the Caribbean to the UK between 1948 and 1973, so named for the British ship Empire Windrush.

In 2017, it emerged hundreds of the Windrush generation had been wrongly detained or deported by the UK government. More than £41million has since been paid to victims of this scandal.

On Saturday, an interactive storytelling session inside the Town Hall will tell the story of Windrush and its legacy, while the full programme will “feature the best in Afro-Caribbean music, food, art and history”.

Other events being held on the day include a dominoes tournament, a drumming workshop by Mbilla Arts and a performance by Senegalese singer Amadou Diagne.
