Parking spaces outside three businesses around the borough are being turned into miniature “parklets” by Waltham Forest Council.
The public recreational spaces will be installed in August outside Stone Mini Market in Leytonstone, Froth and Rind in Walthamstow and Cove 17 in Wood Street.
Existing parklets can be found in Coppermill Lane (just outside the Echo office) and Winchelsea Road.
The new additions will include features like a playground and a mini performance space.
Co-deputy leader Clyde Loakes said: “This clean air day, we’re showing an alternative to the polluting motor vehicles that dominate too much of our urban landscape.
“We’ve been working closely with businesses and the local community to find the perfect locations for the new parklets, which I’m sure will quickly become valued and vibrant hubs for the local community.
“We’re committed to bringing more parklets to Waltham Forest as we want more and more people to reap the benefits of reclaiming small pieces of their local area from cars to use the space instead for performances, seating for cafés, or parks for our kids to enjoy.”
A series of new, even smaller, “micro” parklets are planned for the area around Leytonstone High Road.
Micro parklets have already been installed in Church Lane and outside the Wild Goose Bakery and San Marino Café recently, with another soon to appear outside Fitness Hub.
