A free public bookcase destroyed by vandals in Walthamstow has been reinstalled – complete with extra security – thanks to community donations.

In August, a “little free library” outside the William Morris Community Centre in Greenleaf Road was defaced with white paint and knocked off its perch.

It’s unclear who destroyed the library and why but the community quickly banded together to replace it, raising £350 in a short space of time.

Sean Rodrigo, who creates mini foodbanks around the borough, used the donations to install a new, upgraded library with help from local companies.

Sean told the Echo he had “no idea” who attacked the original library but that he had been able to add a security camera after the fundraiser exceeded its goal by £50.

He added: “The new library has solar lights on the outside and motion sensor solar lights on the inside that allow for night time browsing.”
