Every Wednesday morning a group of older people meet in Leytonstone. The Golden Racquets is no ordinary badminton club.

These 50-to-90 year-olds are here to walk, run and smash their way to a win, all the while forging friendships and building a community in the east end of London.

I first met some of the Golden Racquets at The Pastures Sports centre after hearing about a very active and talented group of senior players.

Once I saw how they were being so active and competitive I was inspired to share their story. In contrast to preconceptions of old age and my own experience with family members of similar ages I was impressed by their physicality and camaraderie.

The club made me feel very welcome and they were happy to share their stories. The film is just a snippet of the club and wonderful community, to understand it completely you would have to join them on a Wednesday.

Golden Racquets welcomes everyone, whatever their skill level, whatever their needs. If you wish to join please contact Anne at [email protected]
