The Leytonstone chapter of the Women’s Institute, Stone Rangers, recently celebrated their tenth anniversary
By Jill Hesler

For ten glorious years, the Stone Rangers (the Leytonstone branch of the Women’s Institute) has been raising money for charity and providing support to local women.
Since 2014 we have raised over £10,000 for charities including Solace Women’s Aid and Samaritans of Waltham Forest. We have also made hundreds of heart shaped cushions for breast cancer patients at Whipps Cross Hospital.
First president Michel Smith explains why she founded the group: “The WI had the history and a formidable reputation for driving change on issues impacting women, but there was nothing in Leytonstone, so I decided to set one up.”
Stone Ranger Julia Ingall recalls the pleasant surprise she felt at realising SRWI was just as much about making friends through fun activities as it was about raising funds for important causes. She says: “It’s the friendship, support and getting to know local women I value the most.”
