A Chingford man died after being struck by car while on holiday in Spain in July.

As reported in the Romford Recorder, Steven Campbell, 51, was pronounced dead in hospital after the road incident on the evening of 9th July. His wife, who has not been publicly named, was also struck by the car, but survived.

Steven was named at the opening of an inquest into his death at the East London Coroner’s Court in Walthamstow on 14th August, where it was revealed he died due to “severe head trauma”.

Speaking at the inquest, assistant coroner Dr Shirley Radcliffe said: “[Steven] and his wife were on holiday in Spain when they were struck by a car on the evening of July 9.”

Adding that he was taken to hospital with “catastrophic brain injuries”, Dr Radcliffe continued: “Despite all possible treatment, he died.”

According to the Recorder, a date is yet to be decided for a full inquest.

A spokesperson from the UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office did not confirm or deny if Steve Campbell and his wife were involved in a widely reported crash in the same exact location at the same time. They told the Echo: “We are supporting the family of a British man who has died in Spain and are in contact with the local authorities.”

A local news outlet in Murcia has reported that a driver was caught by police on the evening of 9th July with more than three times the legal alcohol limit in his bloodstream.

The British couple he struck, believed to be Steve Campbell and his wife, were on a zebra crossing outside a hotel.

The driver, who Murcia Today reports had recently attained Spanish citizenship, has been accused by local police of reckless homicide, causing serious injury, and two offences against road safety.

At a court hearing, the driver is alleged to have claimed he didn’t see the couple crossing the road due to poor lighting, and insisted he was driving at no more than 40 kilometres per hour.

In March, a British woman was accused of driving under the influence of alcohol before mowing down a family, and killing a four-month-old baby in Lanzarote.

Alex Brown, 23, chose not to answer questions at a preliminary hearing into the crash in May. British mother Alex Chadkirk, aged 28, was injured in the crash that killed her young baby daughter, Harper.
