A former Waltham Forest Council employee who falsely claimed she was a senior officer to help her brother get a job faces court costs of more than £1,200.

In June 2022, Olayemi Labaeka wrote a reference letter to recruitment agency Home Group claiming that she was “head of accomodation” at Waltham Forest Council to help her brother Abdul Toyin Ogun’s application.

In reality, Labeaka was an officer on the councils anti-social behaviour team.

Waltham Forest Council investigated and prosecuted the former employee last year.

She pleaded guilty to one count of fraud by false representation at Thames Magistrates’ Court on 30th January, recieving a fine of £400, an £832 court costs order and a victim surcharge of £40, which she will repay at £100 per month.

Waltham Forest Council chose not to publicise the prosecution, but limited details of the case were revealed in court records which came to light this week.

When approached for comment, the council refused to share further details about the case.

Cabinet member for finance and resources Paul Douglas said: “The council does not tolerate fraud or corruption by partners, contractors, clients, employees, agency workers, consultants, or members of the council.

“When fraud or corruption is substantiated, cases will be pursued thoroughly with the form of action taken dependant on the seriousness and circumstances of each case.

“In most instances, however, the action will involve disciplinary action against Council employees, prosecution, and recovery of council assets and funds where possible.”
