The founder of a social enterprise specialising in tuition for young people has grand ambitions, writes Hamza Ghafoor
In an era of severe economic and political volatility, the competition for the top universities and top careers is fierce.
Both the Education Index and the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) rankings show the UK’s performance as mediocre and underwhelming compared to its international peers.
It is now more important than ever to ensure that our society remains wholly focused on education to not only boost our rankings but to ensure economic and social prosperity in the longer term.
Research shows that one of the biggest influencers for academic success is motivation – this is where Study Right is striving to drive change.
Study Right is a social enterprise focused on delivering educational value to students who need it most. We have built a solid reputation within the borough and supported thousands of students through primary and secondary education as well as in finding further learning opportunities following school.
In Walthamstow our branch manager Nabeeha boasts about the great lengths she goes to, employing the brightest minds to deliver teaching from Key Stage 1 to A-Levels; each tutor is a subject specialist and has studied their field at degree level.
Education through motivation is the Study Right mantra. The organisation places great importance on ensuring every tutor wholly adopts the ‘growth mindset’ and puts this philosophy into practice to create a highly effective three-pronged teaching tool; the motivated teacher, motivated classroom, and motivated student.
Study Right is based in Wood Street, where we currently tutor and mentor 300-plus students. We have become an integral part of the local community, reaching hundreds of local families within the borough. In only four years we have achieved great feats. Prospective students can find and connect with Study Right alumni who have gone on to conquer multiple paths and pursue various ambitions, ranging from studying at Harvard and Cambridge to training at a renowned chef school.
Although holding an initial vision to simply provide great tuition, Study Right has evolved into an organisation that delivers so much more. Having recently opened up an additional centre in Tottenham the company is looking to expand further into Chingford with the aim of using these locations as hubs for another exciting venture.
Many of our students go on to lead successful lives and take steps to a brighter future. However, some still struggle to fulfil their potential due to a lack of opportunity and limited career avenues to explore. As a consequence, one of our long-term strategic goals is to help close the digital skills gap that threatens to disenfranchise and disengage the students of today.
To achieve this goal, Study Right is in the process of forming a new Community Interest Company (CIC) called Study IT, which will be formed for the sole purpose of striving toward a more digitally inclusive society and to help satisfy common digital employment requirements.
I hope Study Right will stand as a pillar for education within the Waltham Forest community.
