Over 60 residents attended a traditional afternoon cream tea party filled with music and singing on Silver Sunday, the national day for older people

On Sunday 5th October, Age UK Waltham Forest welcomed over 60 local residents to a vintage-inspired afternoon cream tea party that combined tradition, music, and fun.
The event, held on Silver Sunday, the national day dedicated to celebrating older people, took place at The Hub in South Chingford and offered guests the quintessential English cream tea experience, with freshly baked scones and pastries, a range of finger sandwiches on fine china with volunteers providing a silver service experience.
But the afternoon was far from ordinary. Unexpectedly breaking into song, Age UK Waltham Forest’s ukulele and singing groups joined forces for an unexpected flash mob. Their performance brought a buzz to the room, encouraging smiles and spontaneous applause
from the audience.
Adding to the occasion was a refined performance by Ralph Meanley, a baritone, who has sung for English National Opera, the BBC and also West End theatres delivered a selection of classic show tunes. His rich voice resonated through the room, offering a professional and nostalgic touch that perfectly complemented the celebration of Silver Sunday.

The event could not have been made possible without the invaluable assistance of volunteers including staff from Stow Brothers Estate Agents, who helped with serving and event management.
Local residents Arthur and Phyllis Bedwell, offered heartfelt thanks after the event: “We both want to thank you and all your helpers for a wonderful afternoon. We are sure that there were hours and hours of work put in for the two hours we enjoyed.”
Age UK Waltham Forest Chief Executive Officer, Emma Tozer, challenged outdated expectations often associated with events for older people: “Some might think an afternoon cream tea is a quiet, old-fashioned affair, but this event proved otherwise. The surprise flash
mob and vibrant performances showed just how fun and dynamic gatherings for older adults can be. Silver Sunday is about bringing people together to celebrate, connect, and most importantly, to challenge stereotypes by showing the energy and value of older people in our community.”
Silver Sunday events like this one play an essential role in developing friendships and wellbeing among older adults in Waltham Forest. Age UK Waltham Forest continues to deliver a broad programme of activities and services aimed at tackling loneliness and promoting social inclusion.
