New bus ‘Superloop’ to run through Walthamstow

Two new express routes will connect Walthamstow Central Station to four other outer London boroughs

A new bus ‘Superloop’ being launched across outer London will create new faster ways to travel from Walthamstow to nearby boroughs.

Transport for London (TfL) is creating a ring of express bus services around the capital, two of which will stop in Walthamstow, to provide new public transport options for drivers affected by the expansion of the Ultra Low Emission Zone.

One route will travel from Walthamstow to Edmonton and Arnos Grove before finishing in North Finchley. In the other direction, buses from Walthamstow will travel directly Ilford before terminating in Royal Docks.

Mayor of London Sadiq Khan has awarded the scheme an initial chunk of £6million in funding and it is proposed that the Superloop will be introduced in stages.

Mayor Khan said: “When I made the tough decision to expand the ULEZ London-wide, one of my key commitments to Londoners was to improve transport links in outer London.

“I am delivering on that commitment as we announce the Superloop, the game-changing new network of express buses that will add over four million additional kilometres to our bus network in outer London, linking stations, town centres, hospitals and transport hubs.

“These new routes will make it much easier for Londoners to get around the capital, and help build a better, greener London for everyone.”

TfL data shows that the most recently introduced limited-stop express route, the X140 from Harrow to Heathrow, delivered a 10%-15% increase in weekday demand.

Alex Williams, chief customer and strategy officer at TfL, said: “The Superloop is the jewel in the crown in our plans to strengthen alternatives to the private car travel[…] and is a game changer for outer London.”
