Gakusei Karate held a charity marathon 24-hour karate session from 11am on Saturday 17th October until 11am on Sunday 18th October at the club’s dojo on Skeltons Lane

A Leyton-based karate club has raised £1,400 for Great Ormond Street Hospital Children’s Charity (GOSH Charity) after hosting a 24-hour martial arts marathon.
Organised by Gakusei Karate, the event took place from 11am on Saturday 17th October until 11am on Sunday 18th October at the club’s dojo on Skeltons Lane, Leyton.
The marathon brought together martial artists from different backgrounds and disciplines, demonstrating the power of community collaboration and a shared commitment to helping seriously ill children and their families.
Throughout the event, eight volunteer instructors generously contributed their time and expertise, delivering martial arts workshops, practical self-defence training and sessions exploring traditional martial arts principles.
Representatives from KAPAP Self Defence, Shojuijitsu Karate Walthamstow, 5 Elements MMA & boxing, Grupo Muzenza Capoeira UK – London & Kent, Carrera’s Studio martial arts, Agar-Hutton Tai Chi Academy and Teach Me Kung Fu Schools joined instructors from Gakusei Karate to support the fundraising initiative.
Participants experienced different martial arts approaches while training together for a common purpose.
Through donations and the generosity of supporters, the marathon raised £1,400 for GOSH Charity, which helps support the hospital’s work caring for seriously ill children and their families.
Sensei Amandeep Singh Chodha, lead instructor at Gakusei Karate and organiser of the event, said: “Martial arts is about much more than learning how to fight. It’s about respect, perseverance and supporting others.
“Having eight instructors give up their time to support this event shows the strength of our martial arts community. We may practise different styles, but we share the same values.
“Raising £1,400 for Great Ormond Street Hospital Children’s Charity is something we can all be proud of. I’m incredibly grateful to everyone who taught, trained, volunteered or donated.
“Hopefully, this event will inspire other clubs and organisations to come together and make a positive difference in their communities.”
Gakusei Karate operates in Leyton and Chelmsford, delivering self-defence-based karate classes for children, teenagers, adults and older people.
The marathon embodied the club’s commitment to community, personal development and using martial arts as a force for good.
The organisers extend their thanks to all eight volunteer instructors, participants, supporters and donors who helped make the event possible.
