Residents at a care home in Chingford recently enjoyed an afternoon of fun and friendly competition when the local Scouts joined them to celebrate the simple joys of traditional games.

Care UK’s Ivy Grove, on Hatch Lane, teamed up with children from the Chingford Scouts to take part in an intergenerational board games night.

Throughout the evening, residents and their competitors took part in matches of Guess who, Jenga and Connect Four, alongside puzzles, with plenty of friendly rivalry and laughter along the way.

Resident Betty Williams said: “It was wonderful having the Scouts join us. Playing Connect 4 brought back such happy memories of playing games with my family when I was younger, and learning new ones like Pictionary and Jenga was brilliant. We all loved having the Scouts visit, their enthusiasm and joy for spending time with us really made the evening special.”

The event was part of Care UK’s ‘Bored Games’ initiative – a nationwide campaign intended to revive the magic of family and community games nights. At a time when social media and online gaming have transformed how people spend their leisure time, the initiative is celebrating the simple joys of spending time together playing traditional board games and the memories they can create.

From community events and intergenerational activities, Care UK care homes across the UK are celebrating togetherness and reconnecting residents with the games that shaped their younger years.

Jacob Mante, home manager at Ivy Grove said: “We had such a wonderful time opening our doors to the Chingford Scouts to take part in a games evening. It was fantastic to see everyone getting involved and enjoying some friendly competition.

“For many residents, traditional games nights represent a lifetime of treasured memories, so this was a great opportunity to revisit those moments while creating new memories with a younger generation.

“It was truly heartwarming to watch residents reminisce and share stories about games they enjoyed when they were younger, while also discovering new favourites together.

“We’d like to extend a huge thank you to the Chingford Scouts for joining us and making the day so special. We’re already looking forward to our next games night!”
