Man hit by bus at Walthamstow Bus Station

A man has been hospitalised after being struck by a route 275 bus at Walthamstow Bus Station today (22nd September).

Emergency services rushed to the scene after the Stagecoach-operated bus struck the man at around 10am this morning.

The man, who is understood to have been elderly, was treated at the scene by advanced paramedics from the London Ambulance Service (LAS), before being taken to a major trauma centre as a priority.

Rosie Trew, TfL’s head of bus service delivery, said: “We care deeply about the safety of everyone who uses our transport network and our thoughts are with the person who was injured following a collision with a route 275 bus at Walthamstow bus station.

“We’re urgently investigating alongside the operator, Stagecoach, and the police to find out what happened and we have support for anyone affected by this incident.”

The LAS said: “We were called at 10:06am today (22nd September) to reports of a road traffic collision at Walthamstow Bus Station, Selborne Road, E17.

“We sent an ambulance crew, a paramedic in a fast response car and an advanced paramedic.

“We treated a patient at the scene and took him to a major trauma centre as a priority”.

The incident comes the same week TfL is due to sit Westminster Magistrates Court to hear the health and safety charges brought against it by the Health and Safety Executive.

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) alleges that between 1st January 2004 and 15th December 2023, TfL failed to ensure traffic routes at the northern crossing of the bus station were suitable for pedestrians and the vehicles using them.

The health and safety charges come nearly three years after a retired nurse was fatally struck by a route 212 bus at the station in December 2023.

74-year-old Grace Mecaley’s death prompted the installation of new permanent pedestrian crossings on its northern and western sides in December 2024.

The crossings came after new “temporary signals” were added to the station in May that year in response to a HSE contravention notice that was filed in March 2024.

A fresh contravention notice was issued in March 2025 after unannounced HSE inspectors found bus drivers were failing to give pedestrians priority to cross to and from the bus station’s “central island”, where passengers board and alight from buses.
