Pandemic Spring by Alke Schmidt

Pandemic Spring is Alke Schmidt’s visual diary of the Coronavirus pandemic, inspired by the contrast between the grim record of Covid19 statistics and the beautiful, life-affirming signs of spring emerging everywhere in Walthamstow.

Each work consists of a watercolour & pencil drawing of a plant on top of a printout of graphs showing total confirmed Covid19 cases and deaths in 8 countries on the day of the drawing [ based on data from John Hopkins CSSE.]

During April Alke did daily drawings. Then she continued the diary on a weekly basis until 21st June, the first day of summer.
