Twenty groups will receive grants of up to £15,000 each to support waste prevention activities

Twenty community groups across North London are set to receive grants of up to £15,000 each to support waste prevention activities.

Recipients of the North London Community Fund, delivered by North London Waste Authority (NLWA), span Barnet, Enfield, Haringey, Waltham Forest, Camden, Islington and Hackney boroughs.

The projects cover a variety of strategies to reduce different waste streams, including food, plastics, textile, electrical and household waste.

Examples of projects include New Tribe CIC, delivering workshops on natural dyeing and weaving with plant-based waste; Play it Again Toys CIC, running pop-up toy repair sessions and educating on waste prevention; and Footprint for Good, empowering young people through furniture upcycling workshops.

NLWA chair Clyde Loakes said: “It’s inspiring to see the creativity and dedication of our community groups in tackling waste prevention and we are proud to support twenty projects this year, an increase from last year’s 14.

“By investing in these initiatives, we are not only cutting waste but also fostering a culture of sustainability and resilience in our communities as well as aiming to reach new audiences to ensure the groups reflect our diverse communities. In 2023, our members unanimously agreed to safeguard the funding for this pivotal initiative, affirming our belief in the power of grassroots efforts.

“The flagship fund is a testament to our unwavering support for initiatives on the ground that make a real difference to residents and protect our environment. I am looking forward to seeing the positive outcomes of the latest round of recipients and welcome their significant contribution to North London’s transition to a circular economy.”

NLWA established the fund to meet its waste prevention objectives and enhance the efforts of local groups addressing waste challenges at the grassroots. It has enabled 81 projects to reach thousands of North London residents since its launch in 2017.
