The football culture documentary Scran Away sees foodie Jono Yates takes a trip to see the best food establishments near Leyton Orient FC

Jono Yates, the face behind Only Scran, is serving up a fresh-take on football culture with Scran Away, a new weekly social series celebrating Britain’s best away days for food lovers – kicking off at Leyton Orient.
Focusing on the community, culinary traditions, and modern perspective of the beautiful game, the first episode of Scran Away celebrates the matchday culture and hidden gems surrounding Leyton Orient.
Launching in Leyton, the east-London town embodying everything Scran Away – unpretentious, unpolished and full of life.
The launch episode is a celebration of the grafters, immigrants and diehard locals of Leyton, hearing from the great grandson of Noted Eel & Pie House’s founder, sampling The Macbeth at Deeney’s and enjoying pints at the Leytonstone Tavern. Scran Away also gets stuck in at E10’s halal Texas-style barbeque spot, Burnt Smokehouse, taste-testing their unmatched beef links, corn ribs and melt-in-the-mouth brisket.
Jono Yates, of Manchester, experiences his first jellied eels, uncovers the north-south culinary divide – which lies somewhere between liquor and gravy – and shares bitterness towards the food service at his local club, Old Trafford.
Supporting and spotlighting the local spots beloved by football fans is central to this series, Jono is introducing these much-loved establishments to a national audience 1.3 million strong. By highlighting these businesses, Scran Away celebrates the role they, and hospitality more widely, plays in creating and preserving a diverse and rich football culture.
Scran Away hears from the game-goers, season-ticket holders and even those who work in the busy stands, exploring their multi-generational relationship with the club, deep-rooted traditions and enduring passion for The Os.
“It’s the people’s team, Leyton Orient. Look at it around [the club’s local pub] you’ve got that mix of new East London and old East London. Old East London is now in Essex and Hertfordshire so they come every Saturday and mix with the new East London. It’s a proper mix and it’s great.”
By chatting in the pub with locals, the documentary shows supporters sharing their love of Leyton’s football culture.
Jono Yates said: “Football in Leyton isn’t just about the 90 minutes—it’s about the people, the traditions, and the shared experience that brings everyone together. With Scran Away, I loved meeting the incredible people behind these spots – Leyton’s warmth, diversity, and community spirit make its matchday culture something truly special.”
