A woman was rushed to hospital after being struck by a route 66 bus in Church Lane, Leytonstone on Saturday (17th October).

The Metropolitan Police and Transport for London (TfL) are investigating the collision.

The incident, which occurred at around 12.56pm on Saturday, saw a number of emergency vehicles and a London Air Ambulance helicopter race to the scene opposite Leytonstone Station.

The woman, whose age is unknown, was treated at the scene by paramedics and then rushed to a major trauma centre by road.

In November 2024, Carol Wright, 79, was fatally struck by a route 66 bus in the same street. She died three days after being rushed to hospital for her injuries.

Nick Owen, TfL’s head of bus performance, said: “Our thoughts are with the person who has been injured following a collision with a route 66 bus in Waltham Forest on Saturday.

“We’re urgently investigating alongside the operator, Arriva London, and the police to find out what happened and we have support available for anyone affected by this incident.

“We care deeply about the safety of everyone who uses our transport network and our thoughts remain with everyone affected by incidents on our buses.

“We are dedicated to learning from every incident as part of our comprehensive strategy to eliminate deaths and serious injuries on the transport network.

“We have made strong progress on bus safety in the capital, however, any death or injury is one too many – which is why we continue to deliver major safety improvements across our fleet, our roads and the wider bus network.”

A London Ambulance Service spokesperson said: “We were called at 12.56pm on Saturday 17th October to reports of a road traffic collision on Church Lane, Leytonstone.

“We sent resources to the scene including an ambulance crew, a paramedic in a fast response car, an incident response officer and paramedics from our hazardous area response team (HART). We also dispatched London’s Air Ambulance.

“We treated a woman at the scene and took her to a major trauma centre by road.”

Last month, TfL was fined £2million after being found guilty of health and safety offences in relation to the death of 74-year-old Grace Mecaley in Walthamstow Bus Station in December 2023.

At a sentencing hearing at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on 25th September, it was ruled TfL had failed to ensure pedestrians and vehicles could circulate safely at the bus station for nearly 20 years.
