GLL hosted a charity quiz last Friday focused on greyhound racing and the history of Walthamstow Stadium, in aid of the Home Run Hounds Greyhound Charity which has helped more than 2,000 former racing greyhounds find new homes

Better Gym Walthamstow Stadium, located on the site of the iconic greyhound racetrack, brought the venue’s history to life on Friday 18th September with a special fundraising event for local charity Romford Retired Greyhounds.
The evening brought together gym members, non-members, the Better Gym team, Katie and Andrew Isaac from Romford Retired Greyhounds and the guests of honour – former racing greyhounds Glenda and Nora.
Guests were invited to test their knowledge with a special quiz focused on greyhound racing and the history of Walthamstow Stadium, alongside team challenges, Jenga and close-up magic.
Romford Retired Greyhounds is part of Home Run Hounds Greyhound Charity and has helped more than 2,000 former racing greyhounds find new homes over the past ten years. Katie Issac from the charity gave a talk about the charity’s work and why greyhounds make great family pets.
Andrew Isaac said: “We were delighted to join forces with Better Gym Walthamstow Stadium and bring its history to life for the local community.
“Everyone who came along definitely learnt a lot about greyhounds and they all loved meeting Glenda and Nora.”

The evening also gave guests the opportunity to look back at the stadium’s racing heritage, with photographs displayed around the room showing key moments from its history, from its opening in 1933 through to its closure as a racing venue in 2008.
GLL developed the facility and opened the new gym in 2019. It has over 100 fitness stations for cardio, functional training, strength and resistance, as well as a 22-metre indoor running track – the longest in Waltham Forest. A wide range of classes are on offer all week, including sessions for juniors and seniors.
Walthamstow Stadium assistant manager Olaniyi Shokunbi said: “This unique event brought together existing members, non-members, a local charity and the gym team in a relaxed community setting, while raising funds and awareness for a worthwhile cause.
“We also had a talk from one of our gym members about the positive impact exercise has had on her life, which was really powerful. We will be looking to do similar community events in the future as they are a great way to bring people together.”
