A developer is seeking permission to convert a Walthamstow building used for storage space into flats.
A commercial building in Sutherland Road, near Blackhorse Road Station, could be converted into 22 homes according to new plans submitted to Waltham Forest Council.
The ground floor would be refurbished and retained as shops, while the first floor would be converted into housing. Four additional storeys would be added onto the building, with the top two floors set back.
Each flat would be self-contained, with its own private balcony or terrace.
The plans detail five studio apartments, nine one-beds, five two-beds, and a trio of three-beds.
The applicants describe the scheme as one that balances the area’s “urban context” against the council’s ambitions to increase housing in the borough, as per its Local Plan.
It will “enhance” the borough’s architecture and “supports the vision of a vibrant, inclusive, and resilient Waltham Forest”.
In 2015, Waltham Forest earmarked the Blackhorse Lane area for 2,500 new homes to be built by this year.
The scheme has been developed over a series of meetings with the council’s planning department, beginning last May.
A public consultation was held between 10th December and 12th January. The forms were downloaded a total of 50 times, but the scheme received no comments or objections from locals.
The building is currently used by a wholesale fashion retailer for storage, but they intend to move to a better quality, purpose-built warehouse in the Blackhorse Lane area, the application says.
The scheme has been delegated, which means it may not require approval from the council’s elected planning committee.
Plans to demolish the nearby 22 Sutherland Road and build 14 new apartments spread across a part-three, part-four-storey building have been recommended for approval by council planning officers.
