The Seven Magnificent Egos will thrill audiences at Ye Old Rose and Crown Theatre from Wednesday 15th to Sunday 19th October, writes Madison Yarbrough

A new Western play with a twist is coming to Walthamstow.
The Seven Magnificent Egos will thrill audiences at Ye Old Rose and Crown Theatre from Wednesday 15th to Sunday 19th October.
Created by Lance Nielsen, the play explores the actors behind the original film The Magnificent Seven and their egos and feuds.
I sat down with Lance, co-producer Simon Barry, and the rest of the cast to discuss the making of the hyper-satirical play.
Lance has a lengthy history of writing and directing over sixteen plays and most of his works have faced serious topics. For this play, however, he wanted to have some fun.
“It’s a fun night out full of humour and silliness and I think that’s quite nice for us because at the minute the world feels quite heavy.”
Lance had the idea for this play, but it was not until he met Simon Barry that things started to come to life. The two met at a party where he heard Barry comically performing an American accent, coincidently dressed similar to Steve McQueen.
I spoke with the other actors as well, and we discussed the layers of the play.
Not only is everyone playing an actor from the film, but they’re also playing other peripheral characters as those actors.
Tristan Pegg who plays Robert Vaughn, said: “It’s all about perception and illusion and as actors playing actors, playing actors, or characters, it’s that melting pot of ‘none of this is real’, though we are portraying real people, we are versions of those real people.”
When I asked what the most enjoyable part of rehearsals and play building was, everyone agreed on comradery.
Speaking about the cast Lance said: “We’re very lucky with the cast as well, it’s rare for people to agree so quickly and strongly on who to cast for what, [we’re] very fortunate in that sense.”
The play is one sure to bring comedy and satire to life through these Hollywood legends.
