Up to 100 firefighters and eight fire engines are tackling a fire at a block of flats near Blackhorse Road Station in Walthamstow.

According to the London Fire Brigade (LFB), half of a roof terrace on the sixth floor of a Collendale Road building is alight. A small part of the roof and a duplex flat on the fifth and sixth floors are also on fire.

The LFB said it has received around 50 calls so far about the fire, with the first coming in at 1.35pm.

Crews from Walthamstow, Tottenham, Hornsey fire stations were sent to the scene.  A 32-metre turntable ladder is being used at the scene to help fight the fire from above.

The cause of the fire is not yet known. The Echo understands the fire has been under control since 3pm.

Collendale Road resident Clair Cook told the Echo that the “ferocious” fire started on the sixth floor of the building, before quickly spreading to the roof. “I think at least three flats are affected by the fire – it was bad. It looks like part of the roof has collapsed. The fire has been under control for a while and there’s minimal smoke now but firefighters are still spraying the roof with water.”

The Echo understands that no casualties or injuries have been reported.

Pictures from the scene show firefighters spraying the fire from above using an aerial ladder, while a section of the roof appears to be seriously damaged.

Climbing centre Yonder which is located opposite the block of flats is closed this afternoon while firefighters tackle the fire.
