Refurbishment works at the William Morris Gallery in Walthamstow mean its art displays will be closed from Monday 10th March to Friday 4th April.

In 2024, the Gallery received £417,990 of funding from Arts Council England’s Museum Estate and Development Fund (MEND) to address critical thermal performance issues within the Grade II* listed building.

These improvements are part of the gallery’s 75th anniversary programme, and will improve thermal insulation, mechanical cooling and ventilation in the display rooms.

During this period of closure, Deeney’s Café will remain open and main access will be via the gallery’s rear entrance in Lloyd Park. Wheelchair and buggy access will be available via the main entrance, though the gallery warns that this access may be limited at times due to building work.

The gallery’s schools programme will continue throughout this time, with workshops taking place at Winns Gallery in Lloyd Park.

The gallery will reopen on Saturday 5th April for the much-anticipated launch of the Morris Mania exhibition, running from 5th April to 21st September.

Morris Mania is a major new exhibition that illustrates the enduring impact of the designer on British culture.

Opening on 5th April, during the 75th anniversary year of the Walthamstow gallery, Morris Mania, will show how his botanical patterns have been reproduced on shower curtains, phone cases, on film and TV, wallpapers, and in shopping centres.
