A Leytonstone business has been voted the most popular independent shop in London.

Stone Mini Market in High Road, Leytonstone, won the accolade in TimeOut’s Love London awards, which saw 100,000 people vote for their favourite businesses in the capital.

Stone Mini Market is a zero waste shop that sells vegan and vegetarian food, organic produce and craft beers and is open from 11am to 8pm Tuesday to Sunday.

Recently, a Leytonstone Thai restaurant also in the High Road – Singburi – was picked as TimeOut’s 2021 Restaurant of the Year.

Responding to the news on Instagram, co-owner Adrienne wrote: “I will take no credits for this, I think I’m just lucky for having so many wonderful people working with us.”

She recalled arriving in London 19 years ago, when her “daily budget to eat was 26p”, and said fellow owner Okan “did spend a night or two in the park”, adding: “I’m thankful we didn’t give up. Thank you Leytonstone!!!”

Local councillor Clyde Loakes congratulated the pair on Twitter, writing: “Hugely well deserved recognition of the work of the proprietors of Stone Mini Market.

“So very proud & chuffed that their perseverance continues to pay off and inspire. They are true pioneers!”

TimeOut wrote that it “makes sense that the winner of London’s best indie shop wasn’t a bougie ceramics store or posh fashion spot”, given how important cornerstores became during the pandemic.

They added: “Stone Mini Market is known by locals for its wide-ranging selection of tasty produce and friendly vibe.”
