The new Diabetes UK Waltham Forest group meets on the last Tuesday of each month

A new support group for people who have type 2 diabetes is now up and running in Waltham Forest.

The Diabetes UK group is planning support and awareness events for the rest of the year.

Asim Mahmood is chairing the new voluntary group. He said: “The first meeting was a huge success. We discussed priorities and shared stories and experiences of living with diabetes.

“Our vision for the group is not only to offer support to people with type 2 diabetes, but also to help prevent new cases in the community through promoting healthy lifestyle and exercise. We hope to target at-risk groups and let them know how to reduce their risk and make them aware of diabetes related complications.”

People with type 2 diabetes either don’t produce enough insulin, or the insulin they produce doesn’t work properly (known as insulin resistance). Between 85 to 90 percent of people with diabetes have type 2. They might get it because their family history, age, or ethnic background puts them at increased risk. They are also more likely to get type 2 diabetes if they are overweight.

It starts gradually, usually later in life, and it can be years before they realise they have it. Type 2 diabetes is treated with a healthy diet and increased physical activity. In addition, tablets and/or insulin can be required.

The Diabetes UK Waltham Forest group will meet on the last Tuesday of each month at 6pm at the Addison Road Medical Practice/Comely Bank Clinic, 46 Ravenswood Road, Walthamstow E17 9LY. The next meeting takes place on Tuesday 29th May. If you would like to attend the new group or find out more:
