Jo Sealy of the Waltham Forest Business Network introduces us to bloomin’ brilliant milliner Victoria Arthur…
When E17-based Victoria Arthur started making hats and headpieces for fun, little did she know it would start a new business venture – The Head Bloomer Ltd – and end up featured in magazines such as Tatler and Vogue.
Her fascinating journey to making fascinators began in 2013 she explained. “I attended a millinery class to make a hat for an event. I enjoyed the creative freedom the experience gave me so much that I started making hats in my spare time for friends and family, deciding to study millinery further and turn my hobby into a business.”
The Head Bloomer now provides high quality headpieces that are usually unique one-off creations for special occasions. Victoria’s designs can take from just a few days to a number of weeks to create, depending upon the complexity of the design.
While Victoria will participate in pop-up events to promote her classic and vintage creations, much of her work comes through recommendation and she has a growing network of overseas clients.
“January and February are normally quiet months and from March onwards my clients are get- ting ready for the Grand National, Royal Ascot and the wedding season,” she said.
‘Of course, most of last year’s events dd not happen due to the pandemic and that will also have an impact this year. UK orders have been less than normal. It’s been quite challenging.
“Nevertheless, many of my current orders have come from abroad, places such as Ghana where people have been able to hold small events.”
And eight years after The Head Bloomer began, Victoria says she still gets a thrill when a magazine editor requests one of her hats to be featured in their magazine.
“It gives me great satisfaction when I see others appreciate my work. It was a proud moment when a high-profile person wore my hat to a Buckingham Palace Garden Party – and when I came across a customer wearing one of my hats to a royal wedding, which was featured in the Daily Mail!”
