Geometric artworks inspired by local arts and crafts pioneer William Morris have been unveiled at Blackhorse Road Station.

New geometric artwork by Giles Round at Blackhorse Road Station

Artist Giles Round’s ceramic tile installation, a new permanent feature at the station in Walthamstow, is part of a new series of artworks on the Victoria Line created by design group Design Work Leisure.

It was commissioned by Art on the Underground, a project funded by Transport for London (TfL).

For the ticket hall Giles created an installation comprised of 256 handmade ceramic tiles utilising “bold geometric shapes” and are predominantly a deep blue, the original colour of the Victoria Line when it was built in the 1960s.

Outside a large artwork clads the station façade, comprising eight enamel panels. The artwork mimics the patterns from the installation inside. Together they form a bright new feature in Blackhorse Road, an area about to undergo a £2.2million junction upgrade by TfL.

Giles said: “Design Work Leisure aims to produce functional artworks that intervene with the fabric of London Underground.

“The project references the works and values of William Morris.

“It is exciting to see the first of these works at Blackhorse Road Station close to Morris’s childhood home.”
