Members of the Sing 17 choir will celebrate their group’s tenth anniversary on Saturday 20th July at Greenleaf Road Baptist Church, writes Anne Strudwick
On 20th July, the Sing 17 community choir will mark our tenth birthday with a celebration of song. Everyone who has ever sung with us is invited to sing from their seat or join us on stage for any of our 10 song repertoire. It promises to be a joyous affair!
Since 2014 our choir has sung all around the borough and beyond: street parties, pub launches, and music festivals. We were also part of the warm up act for local stars, East 17, at the Waltham Forest Town Hall Christmas lights event which was a thrill for choir members of a certain age.
We kept singing during the pandemic years, alternating between Zoom sessions and Walthamstow Cricket club’s field. We stuck together and emerged stronger, thanks to our merger with MixTape Choir in 2022.
Being in a choir is about more than performance, it is about social connection and community engagement. Our choir members have connected with community groups and spent time singing with them and for them.

Our most recent tingle-factor event was singing at The Margaret Centre at Whipps Cross last Christmas. We hope to return soon.
Music is medicine and singing together energises and relaxes us. We are an audition free choir and no-one is required to read music. We include everyone.
We will be “shaking a bucket” for Kith and Kids, Rise and Shine Campaign.
If you would like to get the measure of us, drop in on Wednesdays during term time for a free, no-strings taster.
