The first council flats on the rebuilt Marlowe Road Estate have been officially handed over to Waltham Forest Council.

In a ceremony on 21st January, council leader Grace Williams cut the ribbon on the first 30 of an eventual 150 council flats being built on the site in Wood Street.

Developer Countryside is years into a regeneration project, first approved in 2015, that will see almost all of the original estate knocked down and rebuilt to add hundreds more homes.

The 298 low-rise flats that once surrounded Northwood Tower, not being rebuilt, will make way for at least 436 new homes.

All 3-bedroom flats in “Feature17” – Countryside’s name for the rebuilt estate – were sold by late December last year, although smaller flats are still available, starting from £399,995.

At the ribbon-cutting, Cllr Grace Williams said: “The housing crisis is one of London’s biggest challenges, which is why we have made it one of our key priorities to ensure that everyone has a decent roof over their heads and has access to genuinely affordable and quality housing.

“We are proud to be working with Countryside to deliver 30 homes for social rent, underlining our commitment to building homes and delivering truly affordable housing for our residents.”

In November, council leaders agreed to let Countryside apply for planning permission to add even more homes, which will be considered by the planning committee early this year.
