Jo Sealy from Waltham Forest Business Network meets a Chingford entrepreneur who is writing her own story

Juliet Chipperfield from Chingford knew that she wanted to write for a living – she just didn’t know how to make a career from it. In 2017, redundancy provided her with the opportunity to give self-employment a chance.

As a freelance copywriter, editor and proof reader, Juliet’s company, Professional Documents, provides all kinds of text services at any stage of the process; researching and writing from scratch, refreshing or reworking existing text, or doing a final check of a finished article.

Whereas a lot of writers will stick to their niche, Juliet enjoys writing different types of text for all kinds of audiences, whether it’s covering website content, blog posts, print brochures and magazines, client information packs, correspondence templates and important letters.

Juliet said: “I knew that I could try to make it as an author, however I ended up in marketing, where I enjoyed the creative side far more than the strategic and analytic side.

“Shortly after returning from maternity leave I was made redundant, so I decided to create my own opportunity.”

But setting up her business has been far from easy for Juliet. She readily admits that she’s had to work hard and do things outside of her comfort zone – such as networking and hand-delivering flyers to local businesses. However she says she has “made some brilliant contacts and had some really interesting work because I pushed myself”.

Juliet adds: “I’m good at tailoring my tone of voice to suit each piece of work. This means I can work across all of a client’s text, whether it’s something for an investor, a client or a staff team.”

Being able to fit her work around her family has been important and since having her second child Juliet had been gradually building up the business – then the Covid-19 lockdown told hold.

Despite this setback, Juliet is confident that once businesses begin to return they will need their websites and documents reviewed. “I’m planning to scale the business up as my children grow. This time next year we’ll be thinking about nursery for my youngest, so I’ll be able to take on bigger projects.”
