Photo series: E17’s patterned streets

For this month’s photography theme, Pattern, photographer Helen Jackson captures the magic of Walthamstow’s vibrantly-designed street art…

“Whilst pounding the same old streets during lockdown, I’ve taken more interest in my surroundings.

“As artwork at Blackhorse Road reminds us Walthamstow is ‘home to people who make and create’ – therefore it’s not surprising that murals with their myriad of patterns abound.

“Graffiti, Maud Milton’s mosaics and Angry Dan’s limericks all have patterns and colour. Shop windows brighten our lives with swirls and shapes. And who would have thought the humble brick was so varied?

“Eventually, when we escape from lockdown, we’ll travel down the escalator to the familiar tiles and moquette fabric at Walthamstow Central.”
