A walk along the River Ching

Photography by Barry Sutton

These pictures were taken a walk along the River Ching between South Chingford and Highams Park. According to the London Encyclopaedia: “Chingford was the Saxon ‘ford of the dwellers by the stumps’ where pile dwellings were built on marshland by the River Lea. The River Bourne, renamed as the Ching, flows down the eastern boundary, through Highams Park and Walthamstow, towards the Lea. The original settlement was probably in this region but by the 12th and 13th centuries settlement had occurred in forest clearings on higher ground.”
